About the Oahu Branch

The roots of the Oahu Branch of the People of Praise go back to the early 1970's. At that time the Pentecostal Movement was attracting the interests of many Protestants and Catholics in Hawaii. Prayer Groups were formed and began meeting in people's homes and churches. Over time, a number of Oahu families began exploring ways to deepen their commitment to one another. Out of these discussions the Light of Christ Community was born in Kailua. In 1978 the leaders of Light of Christ sought advice, assistance and training from the already established People of Praise Communtiy in South Bend, Indiana. In 1981, after a prolonged period of prayer and mutual discernment, it was agreed that the Light of Christ Community would become the Oahu Branch of the People of Praise.
